To be effective, learning experiences must be focussed, relevant and engaging - and definitely should use a blend of media such as print, electronic media, animation and of course physical models and props to illustrate the system and components. This is especially true in technical training, but is equally appropriate where the movement of people or tracking of changing conditions is important, e.g., emergency response incidents.

On many technical systems, a key learning objective relates to the assembly process and ultimate configuration of a spread of equipment. Designing and manufacturing a model set to reflect the learning objective enables clear demonstration of what is required – showing what good looks like! – and also enables delegates to demonstrate their understanding during assessment.

The design brief for training models and props should consider and focus on learning objectives rather than replicating a miniature version of the system components. Similarly, when considering the usability of the learning tool it is important to consider the environment and conditions in which it will be used, transported and stored.
